Mission Statement

The Compassion ministry's goal is to care for those in need in our church body and the Upper Valley emphasizing God's love in both word and deed. We are attempting to lead the church in the biblical mandate from 1 John 3:17-18:

But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.

and James 2:14-17:

What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and filled," without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

Activities

Food Pantry

Provides dry and canned goods to help those with grocery needs. Meets at the VBC Annex on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month at 1 pm, and the 2nd and 4th Thursdays at 6 pm. There is no food pantry on the 5th Thursday.

Community Dinners

Teams of volunteers participate in Listen's Community Dinner program in White River Junction

The Compassion Fund

The Compassion Fund exits to assist people with financial needs in the church body and the wider community. Call the church office at 802-295-5000 to make an appointment to meet with someone from the Compassion Ministry.

Winter Coat Drive

Collects and distributes good, used coats which are distributed through the Food Pantry to those in need.

Northwoods Lunches

Many low income children in the Upper Valley depend on school lunches to have enough to eat, and sometimes go without lunch when school is not in session. Every summer VBC coordinates with other area churches to provide lunches for some of these children in White River Junction, with each church doing it for one week.

Service Opportunity

The Compassion Ministry is looking for additional volunteers to conduct interviews with people who come to the church in need of financial assistance, as well as to help in the Thursday evening food pantry. This is a great opportunity to share the gospel, pray with people, and provide direct support for their physical needs. Meeting times can be flexible, and training is available. Come join a team that has a heart for ministering to the weary and heavy-laden, and experience the joy of pointing people to the source of the great hope that is within us! Please contact Todd Langille if you have any questions.
